This is What Happens to Your Body When You Stop Working Out

What happens when you stop workout

There are times when we suddenly become too engrossed in other things that we don’t get time to hit the gym or go for that morning run. Even though we are highly dedicated to our fitness regime, there are often instances where we have to leave it in order to attend more important things. This generally happens in case of family or personal emergencies, too much pressure at work, taking a vacation, going out on a business trip etc. Fitness requires regularity and if it breaks even once, the pattern of absence begins.

When you stop exercising your body goes through certain changes, similar to what it went through when you began exercising.

Gain body weight
  • When you exercise, your diet changes. You eat more in order to keep your energy levels high.
  • You also need to consume supplements and other nutrients to keep up with your body’s increasing demands.
  • When you stop working out your daily activity level substantially drops but not your diet. It remains the same.
  • Since you don’t work out but maintain the same diet, you tend to accumulate the food instead of utilizing it. This increases your body fat which generally happens within the next 8 weeks.

Body fat is hollow while muscle mass isn’t. Since your activity level reduces, the food we eat keeps accumulating thereby increasing our body weight instead of muscle mass.

Muscle size diminishes
  • It is completely natural for muscles to diminish in size when you stop exercising altogether.
  • When you workout your muscles become toned. They get pumped up.

when you stop exercising your muscle size diminishes and your body becomes soft. It loses its tension.

This happens because a fat layer gets deposited under your skin. You will specially witness this phenomenon with your abs.

Loss in stamina
  • Stamina loss is a common thing experienced in Indian training.
  • For instance, if you could do 3 sets of 25 pushups each while you used to train, it is not necessary you will be able to maintain the same performance level when you are not working out on a regular basis.
  • When you stop training your muscles become weak and that affects your performance.

  • Along with your stamina you will also lose your strength. According to a recent study,

people who stop their training tend to lose their strength within the first two weeks of their forgoing exercise.

  • Even the body’s resistance power decreases substantially.
Body pain
  • Many a times it is also seen that people abruptly leaving their workouts tend to suffer from various body pains, particularly in joints.

Even if you are planning to stop working out, do it gradually rather than doing it suddenly. Give your body time to accept the change.

  • Sudden changes are harmful for our body and can increase the risk of injuries.
