How many calories are there in a Medu Vada & does it have any health benefits?
Medu Vada also known as Ulundhu Vadai is an Indian homemade dish which resembles a doughnut. It is prepared from Urad Dal (Black Gram) flour, raw Rice, Green Chillies, Onions, Curry leaves and Indian spices. It is the most popular and traditional delicacy across South India. Medu Vada made from vegetables and legumes help in enhancing the taste and nutritional value.
The Black Gram is soaked with water and a batter is prepared which is seasoned with cumin seeds, onion, curry leaves, Ginger, baking soda, salt, chillies and Black Pepper. The batter is shaped and deep-fried, resulting in a crispy and fluffy Medu Vada.
Urad dal used in the preparation of Medu Vada is an excellent source of minerals like iron, folic acid, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Though Black Gram is an energy booster, good source of protein, anti-inflammatory and easy to digest, Medu Vada is not a good option for the calorie conscious as it is deep fried and in the process it absorbs lots of oil.
Baked Medu vada is a healthy alternative to traditional Medu Vada. It will reduce the oil content.
