How Many Calories Are There in a Gulab Jamun & Does It Have Any Health Benefits?

Gulab Jamun is a dairy-based traditional Indian dessert which consists of spongy, dough balls that are deep fried and then soaked in sugar syrup. Gulab Jamun is made with clarified butter or ghee, milk powder, flour, baking powder, milk, cardamom, oil, nuts, and raisins. Gulab Jamuns are usually made of khoya, to which maida (plain flour) is added. The mixture is kneaded into dough, made into balls and deep-fried in ghee or oil. The balls are then soaked in sugar syrup.

Eating up to 3 Gulab Jamuns occasionally won’t cause major damage to your healthy diet but going overboard can make a difference. The calories in any dessert can add up quickly, so if you’re worried about your waistline, stick to small servings. You can also use homemade ghee or paneer to enhance the nutritive value of Gulab Jamuns.  Adding milk powder instead of maida can help to reduce the calories. Gulab Jamun gives you calories from fat and simple sugar. Nutritionally, it makes hardly any contribution to your health. Since it is soaked and served in sugar syrup, it may adversely affect your weight loss plan. It may also spike your blood sugar levels, and slow down your metabolism. Gulab Jamun is packed with saturated fat, simple carbohydrates, and empty calories. Since Gulab Jamun is mostly consumed after meals, try to eat a high fiber, balanced meal to minimize your sweet cravings. Gulab Jamun is high in sugar and fat as it is deep fried. Hence, it is advisable to consume it in moderation.
